There are three tactics to employ in fighting this pest.įirst, rotate your crops each year. They do a pretty effective job of eating the leaves of cabbages and related plants, even boring through the entire cabbage head. Most likely, your plants are being chewed by cabbage loopers, a common pest. The trees are medium in size and easy to grow.Ī. The fruit is usually ready to eat in March and remains sweet and juicy until August, if you can resist eating them all before then. It is not the prettiest fruit – the rind can be kind of bumpy – but everyone who tastes Gold Nugget comes back for more. The 2 1/2-to-3-inch fruit are always seedless, have a sweet, rich flavor, and are easy to peel. Gold Nugget was released from the UCR citrus breeding program in 1999 and is my personal favorite. Pixie may not be in stock at your local nursery, but it is readily available on special order. Pixie trees are vigorous growers, and are larger than most mandarin trees. The flavor is sweet and mild, and Pixie will hold on the tree for several months without appreciable loss of quality. The 2-inch fruit matures in late January and is easy to peel. Pixie is a variety that was developed at UC Riverside many years ago. This old time Japanese favorite can be found easily in most nurseries and garden centers. The tree is smaller than most mandarin trees. ![]() The fruit does not hold on the tree as long as other mandarins without losing quality. Expect Owari Satsuma to be ready to eat by mid-December most years, but don’t waste any time eating them. It has a rich flavor with a good balance of sugar and acid. Fruit size will average about 2 1/2 inches in diameter. Owari Satsuma is the original ‘zipper-skin’ fruit. They are very easy to peel, have tender, juicy flesh, and are delightfully mild and sweet. Seedless Kishu are an ideal size for children’s lunches or adult snacks. These fruits average 1 1/2 to 2 inches in diameter, and are usually ready to eat by November – and remain edible from the tree for several months. Seedless Kishu, sometimes sold as Kishu Mini, is the earliest to mature and produces the smallest fruit. Nevertheless, there are several mandarin varieties that grow well in our gardens, that are easy to peel and reliably seedless. Many varieties of mandarins, often referred to as tangerines, will develop an objectionable number of seeds when they are cross-pollinated. We want something that is not too big, sweet, doesn’t have seeds, and is easy to peel. We would like to plant a nice tangerine tree. There is a good range of fruit suitable for growing indoors and, thanks to dwarf varieties, it means there is more currently available to be able to grow inside the house than ever before.
